Cost of keeping a PC running 24 7: How to optimize your PC performance and lifespan



An average desktop computer will use between 65 and 250 watts, whereas a laptop will use between 15 and 60 watts. The components and what it is used for are the biggest determining factors. You can save a lot more electricity by addressing your heating, cooling, and lighting instead of obsessing over whether leaving your computer powered on overnight is using a lot of electricity and costing you a lot of money.


The cost of electricity does vary depending on where you live, so I have done some math and worked out how much it would cost to run the two examples above in a few different countries around the world.


This obviously does vary greatly, but for someone in the US running a high-end gaming PC 24/7 can expect to pay around $233 per year, whereas a laptop with lower power requirements will cost around $58.


I usually have between eight and a dozen computers in my home office, all of them running 24/7. People sometimes question me about that and tell me they think I am wasting power by doing so. I get another related question: Is it better to run a computer 24/7 or turn it off when not needed?


The cost of a computer that is damaged by thermal shock includes the energy cost to build a new one or to replace the damaged parts. I have been running computers of various types 24/7 for over 30 years, and some have broken. However, the interesting thing is not that they did, but that they did so infrequently and what parts broke.


I used a power monitoring device to find that our laptop used 398.24 watts on an average day of usage. Based on this it costs $0.03 per day, $0.90 per month, and $10.76 per year to operate that laptop. Obviously there is going to be a lot of variance in that number.


Our Mac Mini consumed 80 watts while active and dropped to around 15 watts while sleeping. My tracking device found that it cost around $0.065 per day, $1.98 per month, and $23.78 per year. (This number is for the computer only, does not include the display the computer is attached to.)


That is no valid argument because you wouldn't let that lightbulb on either if it wasn't necessary. I'm just saying that running a pc 24/7 wouldn't be a problem in terms of degradation of components but rather the unnecessary electricity usage, especially if you're living somewhere where electricity isn't that cheap...


Also i should add that hibernating your system saves all the programs that are running so you can leave your browser/photoshop stuff open, so you can continue your work right after waking up the system.


I live in Central Florida. Can anyone guesstimate/estimate the average monthly or daily cost of running your average PC? Intel quad core processor, 1 SSD drive for OS and programs and 4-5 1-2 TB hard drives in a RAID setup for data. 750watt PSU. What would your guess be?

There seems to be some confusion about units here. A watt or kilowatt is a measure of power. Power is the rate of energy consumption. A watt (power unit) is one joule (energy unit) per second. To make the numbers simple, we measure electrical energy in watt or kilowatt hours, rather than in joules or kilojoules. A device running at 10 watts for 24 hours uses 10 x 24 = 240 watt hours (or 0.24 kilowatt hours) of energy.
